This year it is exactly 25 years since the Danish national team, beat the reigning world champions, from Germany 2-0 in the finals of The european championsships in football. The danish victory was a complete shock to the sportsworld, as the team wasn't qualified for tournament in the first place.
The Final
The final between Germany and Denmark ended with the danes as the victors, but the game was actually mostly controlled by the German world champions, who fought hard to score. The danes lived to try scoring on counterattacks and as known they succeded.
highlights from the final played on the 26th of june 1992.
The war in Yugoslavia.
Originally the Yugoslavian team had made it to the tournament from the qualification-groups, in front of Denmark, but due to the civil war in the Baltic region, the Yugoslavian team was suspended from the tournament and Danish team got the spot with a weeks notice. Not exactly the best preparation for a big tournament as the European Champioships.
One of the leading characters on the Danish team, was the eccentric goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, from english club Manchester United. All throughout the tournament he had worldclass safes. In the semifinal he saved the penalty from dutch starplayer, Marco Van Basten in the penalty shootout. The safe proofed to be game winning as all Danish shooters scored from the 11 meters.
In the final Schmeichel was yet again at the top of his game with safes on every attempts from the German attack.
Danish starplayer Brian Laudrup had actually resigned from the national team, due to disagreements with coach Richard z moller Nielsen style of play, but he return for championship tournament. He didn't score but was an eternal threat to the opponents which lead to him being selected to the best XI of championship.
The tournament top-score honor was split between 4 players who all scored 3 goals.
Dennis Bergkamp, who was a rising star at the moment. Karl-Heinz Riedler, one of germanys star attackers. Swedens Thomas Brolin. And then Henrik Larsen from Denmark who never had been a notourius goal score and never was ever again. He played 39 matches for the Danish National Team and scored 5 goals in total.
Like his younger brother Michael Laudrup, didn´t like Richard Moller Nielsens kind football-philosophy and had denied to play for Denmark, with him as coach. Altough he did return to the team in 1993. In 1992 Michael Laudrup played for spanish superclub FC Barcelona, along side players like Ronald Koeman, Hristo Stoichkov and Pep Guardiola. The coach was non other than Johan Cruyff.
Worlds best keeper.
